What is knob-and-tube safe insulation, and how does it work?
Knob-and-tube safe insulation is a sequence, not a material. On a pre-1950 Denver home the question is never which insulation to use — cellulose, fiberglass, and foam all behave the same way around old wiring — it is whether the attic or the wall cavity can safely and legally take insulation at all yet. Knob-and-tube (K&T) is the open-air wiring method used in American houses from roughly the 1880s through the late 1940s: single cloth- or rubber-sheathed conductors run spaced apart through porcelain knobs, threaded through porcelain tubes where they pass through joists and studs. No plastic jacket, no bundled cable, no ground. It is unmistakable once you have seen it, and it is still carrying current in a lot of Denver.
Heat is the reason it governs the whole job. K&T sheds heat during normal operation and was designed on the assumption that the heat dissipates into open, ventilated framing cavities. How do I tell whether the wiring in my attic is knob-and-tube?
Look for porcelain. K&T runs as single conductors spaced apart from each other, supported by porcelain knobs screwed to the joists and threaded through porcelain tubes where they pass through wood. The sheathing is cloth or rubber, not plastic, and there is no ground wire and no bundled jacket. Modern cable looks nothing like it — flat, plastic-jacketed, two or three conductors inside one sheath. What you cannot tell by looking is whether a run is live, and that is the part that decides your project.
Can insulation just go around the wiring instead of over it?
